ALL ABOARD The West Coast
Railway Heritage Park and Museum! For train lovers, history buffs
and children of all ages the Railway Museum is guaranteed to delight.
In the works as a collection for many years (the first car was
purchased in 1963) the Railway Museum decided on Squamish as its
permanent home and opened its doors to the public July 10th, 1994.
Visit the largest collection
of railway cars in Western Canada, featuring over 60 vintage locomotives
as well as many other railway artifacts. Explore antique cabooses,
passenger cars, steam engines (including the last surviving Pacific
Great Eastern steam engine) and the centre piece of the collection,
an 1890 CPR Business Car.
Ride the Mini Rail on a tour
around the park with a stop at the Wilkie and Sweet Apple Stations.
These stations are the actual set used for the movie Bye Bye Birdie
starring Jason Alexander. The Mini Rail route is turned into a
beautiful light display tour at Christmas.
A railway station was originally
planned for Squamish in 1915 but it never materialized. Now, more
than 85 years later, the original plans were used to build the
station which is now the main entrance to the park.
The
West Coast Railway Park and Museum is a work in progress constantly
expanding with fascinating additions sure to delight the new and
return visitors. It is one of the most visited railway parks in
Canada. Season passes are available and the park is open year
round.
HISTORICAL
NOTE:
Water
was the only means of access to Squamish until 1954, when the
Pacific Great Eastern Railway opened between Vancouver and Prince
George. A year later, Highway 99 opened, ending the isolation
of the town of Squamish, which has grown and prospered as a result.
